Founded in 1760 by Pierre Abraham Lorillard, this company has a long-standing history in the tobacco industry. In 1899, it became a part of the Continental Tobacco Company, which controlled numerous small tobacco companies. However, in 1910, James Buchanan Duke acquired Lorillard and its original name was retained. The American Tobacco Company was later dissolved by the U.S. Court of Appeals for being “in restraint of trade,” allowing Lorillard to once again become an independent company. It was also during this time that they acquired the renowned Murad brand.
